New York's Onondaga Lake, a popular 19th-century tourist destination that later became infamous for severe industrial pollution, now houses over 65 fish species. This comes following years of cleanup efforts beginning in the 1970s with wastewater upgrades, industrial remediation and watershed projects. Authorities now call the lake, where fishing was once banned, the cleanest in over a century.
