Oldest evidence of dental surgery found in 59,000-year-old tooth

Researchers found a 59,000-year-old Neanderthal tooth in a Siberian cave in Russia showing the oldest evidence of dental surgery. The tooth had a deep hole where nerve endings and blood vessels are located, made by a stone tool to remove decayed tissue and relieve pain. Researchers said this predates evidence of dental surgery found in Italy from 14,000 years ago.
