One of the oldest barred-spiral galaxies in universe discovered
short by Neeraja Nath / on Friday, 9 January, 2026
Astronomers have spotted COSMOS-74706, one of the earliest observed spiral galaxies containing a stellar bar, formed about 11.5 billion years ago (two billion years after the Big Bang). The discovery was confirmed spectroscopically and without gravitational lensing. Stellar bars can influence their galaxy's evolution by funnelling gas inward from the outer reaches of a galaxy.
