Only 40% Indians have Hindi as mother tongue

Though Hindi is the most spoken mother tongue in the country, the percentage of people listing other scheduled languages as their mother tongue is almost 59%, statistics show. Bengali was the most spoken mother-tongue after Hindi (with 8.11% of the country's population citing it as their mother tongue), followed by Telugu (7.19%), Marathi (6.99%), Tamil (5.91%) and Urdu (5.01%).
