Only 6 countries give women and men equal work rights: World Bank

Only six countries namely, Belgium, Denmark, France, Latvia, Luxembourg and Sweden, give women and men equal legal work rights, a World Bank report has said. It measured gender discrimination in 187 countries, where the six countries scored 100% in equality, whereas India scored 71.25%. Scores were given on the basis of eight indicators ranging from freedom of movement to pension.

Texas University biologists have reported the discovery of a rare 'grue jay' bird, which is the natural result of a green jay and a blue jay’s mating. Notably, the two parents are separated by 7 million years of evolution. "We think it's the first observed vertebrate that's hybridised...due, at least in part, to climate change," the study's first author said.

Pakistan bombs its own region, kills 30 people

Pakistan dropped eight bombs in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa region and killed 30 people, reports said on Monday. The bombs were dropped by JF-17 fighter jets of the Pakistani Air Force around 2 am and killed many, including women and children, in the area. The Pakistani Army reportedly claimed the strikes were part of an operation against TTP.

Which items will fall under 0% GST from today?

With GST reforms kicking in today, several items will now attract 0% GST. These include exercise books, erasers, pencils, crayons, sharpeners, atlases and globes. Life-saving drugs, diagnostic kits, medical oxygen, and health and life insurance premiums are also exempt. Essentials like UHT milk, pre-packaged paneer or chhena, khakhra, pizza bread and all Indian breads will now carry nil rates.

New GST rates take effect; all items to now attract 0%, 5%, 18% or 40% tax rates

The new GST rates, announced by GST Council on September 3, have taken effect. The new tax structure now means that all items sold in India will either be taxed 0%, 5% or 18%, with sin and some luxury goods being taxed 40%. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman earlier said the GST cuts will give ₹2 lakh crore in people's hands.
