Of 597 sacrilege cases registered in Punjab from 2015 till 2026, only 44 ended in conviction - a conviction rate of barely 7 per cent, according to Punjab Police. This was cited as one of the reasons behind the special session of the Vidhan Sabha on Monday passing an amendment to the Jaagat Jot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Sarkar Act.
