Open Biology study finds the reason behind snakes' fasting ability

Recent research has uncovered that certain snake species can survive without food for extended periods. This is due to a genetic absence of ghrelin, the hormone linked to hunger regulation. An analysis of 112 reptile genomes revealed that 32 snake species, particularly in the Colubridae family, lack both the ghrelin gene and its activating enzyme, MBOAT4.
