Opium production in Afghanistan grew by 8% since 2020, marking the fifth year in a row that production has crossed the 6,000-ton mark, the UN said. The estimated production in 2021 was 6,800 tons, it added. Afghanistan accounted for some 85% of global opium production in 2020, supplying some 80% of all opiate users in the world, it further said.
