Outer hair cells regulate ear's sound sensitivity: Study

A new study has found that the ear's tiny outer hair cells adjust the sensitivity of neighbouring inner hair cells to sound levels rather than acting as an amplifier. Cells with hair-like protrusions in the inner ear act like microphones by converting vibrations caused by sound into electrical signals that the brain interprets.
