A total of 5,149 out of 10.13 lakh government schools in India had zero student enrolment as of the 2024-25 academic year, according to official data presented in Parliament. More than 70% of these empty schools are in Telangana and West Bengal. Additionally, the number of government schools with no or fewer than 10 students has increased to 65,054.
