The Tongan government on Saturday said around 84% of its 1,05,000 population has been affected by last week’s volcanic eruption and the tsunami that followed. Ash from the underwater volcano covered the island nation, while tsunami waves destroyed homes in its outer islands. Securing drinking water is now the priority as volcanic ash contaminated the island’s drinking supply, it added.
