Ex-CJI BR Gavai said he was criticised by members of his own community for saying that the creamy layer principle should apply to Scheduled Caste reservations. The principle says those socially and economically ahead should not receive affirmative action benefits even if they are from backward community. However, Gavai added there was "no doubt affirmative action played a positive role."
