Athletes with all kinds of physical and mental disabilities can take part in para swimming in Paralympic games as the sport is straightforward and doesn't require any specific equipment (prostheses aren't allowed). Para swimming is one of the first Paralympic sports and made its debut at inaugural Games at Rome 1960. Athletes with vision impairments are helped by an assistant.
