A study by the University of Cincinnati suggested that monk parakeets "test the waters" before approaching a potential friend to avoid aggressive encounters. The study analysed over 179 relationships and found that stranger birds took time to share space before eventually perching shoulder to shoulder, touching beaks or preening others. The cautious approach resembles how humans form new bonds.
