Parasitic worm that shuts down human pain and itch sensors discovered

A new study in The Journal of Immunology reveals that the parasitic worm Schistosoma mansoni, which causes schistosomiasis, can turn off human pain and itch sensors. By releasing special molecules, the worm suppresses skin neurons to hide from the immune system. This stealth tactic not only helps the worm survive, but could inspire new kinds of pain treatments, scientists said.
