Former Brazilian footballer Pelé holds the Guinness World Record for the most number of goals scored by an individual in a specified period. The forward scored 1,279 goals from 7 September 1956 to 1 October 1977 in 1,363 games. Pelé, who was amongst TIME's 100 most influential people of the 20th century, was born on 23 October 1940.
