PIB Fact Check has dismissed viral claims that the Income Tax Department will gain blanket access to social media, emails and digital accounts from April 2026. It clarified that powers under the Income Tax Act, 2025 are limited to authorised search and survey operations in serious tax evasion cases, and do not allow routine monitoring of citizens' private communications.
