Gemini North, part of the International Gemini Observatory operated by NSF's NOIRLab, captured supernova 'SN 2023ixf'. It was first spotted within the Pinwheel Galaxy by amateur Japanese astronomer Koichi Itagaki. This is the closest supernova from Earth to be discovered within the last five years and the second supernova to occur in Messier 101 within the past 15 years.
