short by Garima Garg / on Saturday, 7 March, 2026
A 60-year-old Bangladeshi Hindu woman, declared a foreigner by a Foreigners' Tribunal in Assam in 2019, was granted Indian citizenship under the Citizenship Amendment Act after a seven-year legal battle. Deepali Das spent two years in a detention camp before securing bail in 2021. The same police report that was used to declare her a foreigner later supported her CAA citizenship application.
