Pope Francis compared Russian war in Ukraine to the "terrible genocide" of the 1930s, saying that "the extermination by famine was...caused by Stalin". During his address at St Peter's Square in Vatican City, Pope Francis mentioned "Holodomor", or death by starvation and said that Ukrainians were suffering today from "martyrdom of aggression". "Let's pray for victims of...genocide," he added.
