Canada-based scientists have developed a portable DNA barcoding kit which reduces the cost of DNA analysis and can identify species within a few hours. Rapid DNA identification is needed to prevent trafficking of threatened animals and plants in developing countries, where port entry officials may have limited taxonomic knowledge, the kit's creator Sujeevan Ratnasingham said.
