The post of the National Security Advisor (NSA) was created in 1998 by the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government and Brajesh Mishra was appointed the first NSA of India. Mishra, who died on 28 September 2012, was a retired Indian Foreign Service officer. NSA is the PM's primary advisor on security matters and the post is currently held by Ajit Doval.
