President Droupadi Murmu has appointed Supreme Court Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai as the next Chief Justice of India (CJI), effective from May 14, 2025. He will succeed CJI Sanjiv Khanna, who is retiring on May 13. Justice Gavai will be the 52nd CJI and notably the second from the Scheduled Caste community to hold the position, after ex-CJI KG Balakrishnan.
