On being questioned about why Russia is not helping Iran amid its conflict with Israel, Russian President Vladimir Putin said, "Almost two million people from the former Soviet Union and the Russian Federation reside in Israel...And, undoubtedly, we always take this into account in Russia's contemporary history." He added that Israel "is almost a Russian-speaking country today".
