Putin visits disputed Kuril islands, Japan calls it 'unacceptable'

Japan PM Sanae Takaichi criticised Russian President Vladimir Putin's first-ever visit to the disputed Kuril islands, calling the visit "absolutely unacceptable". "[Putin's trip] has worsened Japanese sentiment towards Russia [and] wounds the feelings of the Japanese people," she added. The islands have been a disputed region between both countries and were seized by Soviet forces in 1945.
