An MIT study has found that 1-2% of Earth's oldest mantle rocks are made from diamond, which amounts to a quadrillion tons of the precious mineral in the planet's interior. Scientists estimate the diamonds are buried over 100 miles below, deeper than any drilling expedition has ever reached. The discovery was made after scientists found an anomaly in seismic data.
