Indian Railways has approved the ₹993 crore Arakkonam-Chengalpattu Doubling Project in Tamil Nadu to strengthen Chennai's suburban and freight rail network. The 68-km project will reduce congestion, improve punctuality and increase train frequency of suburban rail services. It will also support transportation of automobiles, cement, food grains, iron and steel across key industrial corridors.
