The Supreme Court observed that, though quashing of proceedings in rape cases on the ground of settlement between the parties is discouraged, it can be done under exceptional circumstances, subject to the facts of each case. The power of the court to "secure the ends of justice" is not constrained by a "rigid formula", the court said.
