Rare Arctic lightning strikes Alaska, scientists say 'Hadn't seen anything like that'

Three successive thunderstorms swept across Arctic from Siberia to north of Alaska, unleashing lightning in an unusual phenomenon that scientists say will become less rare with global warming. "Forecasters hadn't seen anything like that before," said a meteorologist. Typically, air over Arctic Ocean, especially when water is covered with ice, lacks convective heat needed for lightning storms.
