Refugee numbers decline to 41.6 million in 2025, first drop 10 yrs: UNHCR

Global refugee numbers fell for the first time in 10 years, declining to 41.6 million in 2025, a UNHCR report said. A total of 5.4 million people fled to other countries to escape violence, while 14.7 million displaced people returned home in 2025. The report added that 70% of refugees originate from Afghanistan, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, Ukraine and Venezuela.
