Taiwan has responded to US President Donald Trump's claim that Chinese President Xi Jinping had assured Trump he wouldn't invade Taiwan while Trump was in office, stating that the island must depend on itself for defence. Despite US' support, Taiwan has no defence treaty with US. The US, however, is legally obligated to provide Taiwan with means to defend itself.
