Republican Mike Johnson won’t seek another term as House GOP leader

US House Speaker Mike Johnson said he would not seek to remain Republican Party’s leader in the House in the next Congress following significant election losses. His announcement came a day after Democrats secured a majority in the House. Johnson was elected Speaker in 2023 after Republicans ousted his predecessor, Kevin McCarthy. He has since served two terms as speaker.
