Researchers create aerogel that turns seawater into drinking water
short by Saurav Joshi / on Thursday, 3 July, 2025
Researchers have created sponge-like material (aerogel) with microscopic air pockets that uses sunlight and plastic cover to convert seawater into freshwater, according to study published in ACS Energy Letters. When sponge is placed in cup containing seawater and covered with plastic, sunlight heats it, evaporating water but not salt. The vapours condense and drip into container as clean water.
