Researchers have found that pigeons find their way back after travelling hundreds of kilometres, as their livers have specialised immune cells called 'macrophages'. These cells accumulate iron while breaking down old RBCs, and this iron detects the Earth's magnetic field, providing pigeons with an internal navigation system. When the cells were removed, pigeons struggled to find their way back.
