Researchers identify brain cells linked to motivation

Researchers at Japan's Nagoya University suggested orexin neurons may play an important role in sustaining and regulating motivated behaviour. Using genetically modified rats, they found boosting orexin activity made rats work harder for food rewards, while reducing these neurons weakened their drive. Orexin activity also rose during reward anticipation and stayed high when rewards were absent.
