Rome was founded by twins Romulus and Remus on April 21, 753 BC, according to Roman mythology. The brothers, believed to be sons of the god Mars and descendants of Aeneas, decided to build a city where they were suckled by a she-wolf after being abandoned. The settlement was eventually named after Romulus after he killed Remus in a quarrel.
