Russia summons Japan envoy after Tokyo protests Putin’s Kuril Islands visit
Russia summoned Japan’s ambassador after Tokyo protested Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to the disputed Kuril Islands. Japan had said Putin's visit "hurts the feelings of Japanese people and is absolutely unacceptable." Soviet Union seized the islands in the final days of World War II in 1945. Japan calls the southern islands the "Northern Territories" and claims sovereignty over them.
