A US Space Force unit has confirmed that a mysterious Russian satellite COSMOS 2499 broke apart in the orbit in January creating a cloud of debris. The satellite broke apart on January 4. The US Space Force's 18th Space Defense Squadron said the event generated at least 85 pieces of trackable debris, orbiting at about 1,170 kilometres above Earth.
