Russian State Duma okays tougher punishment for deserting soldiers

The Russian State Duma on Tuesday approved a bill which seeks to toughen punishments for soldiers who surrender to the enemy or desert a military unit. According to the bill, deserting a military unit during martial law would attract up to 10 years in jail. Under the present law, desertion by a soldier will attract a sentence of five years.
