South Africa on Wednesday recorded its highest-ever single-day rise in the number of COVID-19 cases as it reported 26,976 new infections. The current COVID-19 wave in South Africa is believed to be largely caused by the Omicron variant. South Africa is the worst coronavirus-hit country on the African continent, with more than 32 lakh cases and over 90,170 deaths.
