Iraq's fifth president, Saddam Hussein, was sentenced to death on November 5, 2006. He was convicted of charges related to the murder of 148 Iraqi Shi'ites in Dujail in 1982. The US had also accused him of having links with the al-Qaida. Hussein was hanged till death on December 30, 2006, after his mercy plea was rejected on December 26.
