Saint Valentine, a holy priest in Rome, was beheaded in the rule of Emperor Claudius II on February 14, around the year 278 AD. He was known for performing marriages for young lovers in secret after the practice was banned by the emperor. Eventually, the day became synonymous with exchanging love notes and simple gifts like flowers in his honour.
