American inventor Samuel Colt patented the revolver on February 25, 1836. Colt founded Colt's Patent Fire-Arms Manufacturing Company and made the mass-production of the revolver commercially viable. Colt's company reportedly produced over four lakh revolvers in its first 25 years of manufacturing. Notably, the name 'revolver' was chosen because of the revolving cylinder in the gun.
