Santiniketan in West Bengal's Birbhum district has been added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites. It was established by poet and Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore's father Maharshi Debendranath Tagore as a meditation centre. It was later expanded by Rabindranath into a university town, with the establishment of the Visva-Bharati University in 1921.
