One of the most progressive rulers of early 20th century, the reign of Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III saw significant social reforms. He commissioned the construction of the Lakshmi Vilas Palace as his residence. It was built for ₹60 lakh. Built over 500 acres, this is the largest private home built to date and four times the size of Buckingham Palace.
