The Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) was set up in 1996 by the first post-apartheid government in South Africa. TRC examined the violations of fundamental rights during apartheid. It was aimed at ascertaining the truth, reconciling and not merely punishing the wrongdoer. Hence, if a perpetrator testified and confessed to his crime, he could be granted amnesty.
