State-board schools in Karnataka teaching Kannada as a third language will now have to teach it as a first or second language as per the Kannada Language Learning Act 2015. The rule is passed for class 1 in the 2015-16 academic year, excluding CBSE and ICSE schools. Kannada is a compulsory subject in Karnataka, however not many schools follow it.
