Scientists build cell from scratch for 1st time

Professor Kate Adamala and her team at the University of Minnesota have built SpudCell, a cell-like system from scratch using only known chemical components. It contains 36 purified enzymes, a 90,000-base-pair genome spread across nine DNA molecules and a lipid membrane. Researchers said SpudCell can grow, copy its genome, divide and undergo selection and competition across generations.
