Scientists capture trees glowing with electricity during storms

Scientists at Penn State observed ultraviolet flashes at leaf tips, a phenomenon long suspected but rarely seen outside labs. Known as corona discharge, it involves tiny electrical bursts producing a faint UV glow. During thunderstorms, the negatively charged clouds induce positive charges on the ground, which travel up trees and concentrate at leaf tips, triggering these subtle emissions.
