Scientists create protein-rich cookies using plastic, farm waste

A team from SIU Carbondale has engineered yeasts that can transform molecules from PET plastic and agricultural waste into proteins, fats, acids, vitamins and flavouring compounds. The researchers used these ingredients, along with fibre, starch and sweetener, to make protein-rich, 3D-printed cookies called µBites. Researchers hope µBites could be ready for public consumption within a few years.
